Help The Tank Museum raise £2.5m to build The Vehicle Conservation Centre.

The Tank Museum is bursting to capacity.

Of the 300 vehicles in the collection, 140 (almost half) are stored either outside, or in unheated and leaking sheds. Furthermore, the general public are unable to view these vehicles as the spaces in which they are currently held do not meet important accessibility criteria.



Our exhibition halls are overcrowded, making us unable to maximise the museums potential for creating new and engaging exhibitions and experiences for our visitors.



But we have a solution.

We wish to build a modern, accessible, conservation facility in which we can appropriately look after and house our off-display collections in which vehicles can be rotated in to and out of over a number of years.

The Vehicle Conservation Centre Project.

This new project encompasses a wider programme of museum development and activity, but the main feature is a 40,000 square foot building capable of holding 120 vehicles.

It will be suitably insulated, heated to a constant temperature and publicly accessible. For the first time ever, every one of The Tank Museums vehicles will be stored inside, with the most technically and historically significant in this new high standard building.

The project will also allow:

• Space and facilities for an on going preservation research programme.
• Increased opportunities for volunteers to assist in vehicle conservation work.
• Space in The Tank Museum for a rolling programme of new exhibitions.
• The museum’s ability to collect vehicles once more: both modern and historic.

Building work could begin within a year.

Project Funding:





The Heritage Lottery Fund have committed to funding half the total £5m project
costs, pending approval of a Stage II application.

The Tank Museum will seek the remaining funds from other public and private sources.
